Manage the Android mobile app

The HCP Anywhere mobile app has a Settings page. On the Settings page, you can view information about and manage a number of application settings, such as the size of the cache, the max file size limit, and whether or not the app can be accessed offline.

View the Settings page

In the navigation menu, tap Settings.

Space and cellular data usage

Depending on your HCP Anywhere, the mobile app may use space or data on your mobile device.

Space usage

For each file that you view or download, the app saves the file in temporary storage. This temporary storage is known as the cache. You can set how much space is available in your cache. For information on doing this, see Configuring the file cache.

When you save a file locally, the app saves a copy of the file on your device.

For information on viewing the amount of space that cached and locally saved files occupy on your device, see Viewing user and app information.

NoteOn Android devices, HCP Anywhere uses space only on the device itself, not on the SD card (if the device has one).
Cellular data usage

The app requires Internet access for:

  • Refreshing the Files
  • Refreshing the Saved Locally page
  • Downloading file contents
  • Adding files to the mobile app
  • Saving files locally
  • Creating links to files or folders

To manage the amount of cellular data that the app uses when you are connected to a mobile network, you can:

Viewing user and app information

On the Settings page in the mobile app, you can view this information:

The version number for the app.

  • Username

The name of the user account with which you registered the app.

  • Device name

The name of your mobile device in HCP Anywhere. By default, this is the name of the device itself. You can change this name in the User Portal.

Changing the device name in the User Portal affects only how the device is identified in HCP Anywhere. This does not change the name of the device itself.

  • HCP Anywhere Storage Quota Available

The amount of space available for you to store files in HCP Anywhere. You cannot upload files that are larger than the amount of available storage space.

  • HCP Anywhere Storage Quota Used

The amount of space occupied by the files that you have stored in HCP Anywhere.

  • HCP Anywhere Storage Quota Total

The storage quota allocated to you by your HCP Anywhere administrator. This value is the sum of the values displayed in the Available and Used fields in the HCP Anywhere Storage Quota section.

  • WiFi Only

An indication of when the app can perform cellular-data-intensive operations. For more information, see Configuring Wi-Fi only access.

  • Upload/Download File Size Limit

The maximum size for individual files that the app can upload or download.

    These considerations apply:

    • For a file on your device that's larger than this limit, you cannot add the file to HCP Anywhere.
    • For a file that you've stored in HCP Anywhere that's larger than this limit, the app cannot retrieve the file from the HCP Anywhere system. This means that you cannot view the latest version of the file. Additionally, you can save the file to your local device, but the app cannot download and store a copy of the file to your device.

The default value is 10 MB.

For instructions on changing this limit, see Configuring file size limit.

  • Total Device Storage Used

The total amount of space that HCP Anywhere is using to store files on your device. This value is the sum of:

    • The amount of space used to store cached files
    • The amount of space used to store files that you've saved locally
  • Device Storage Used by Locally Saved Files

The total amount of space occupied on your mobile device by files that you've saved locally. For more information on saving files locally, see Locally saved files.

You can also view this information while viewing your locally saved files. For information on doing this, see Viewing locally saved files.

  • Cache Size Limit

The maximum amount of space on your device that HCP Anywhere can use for caching files. The default value is 200 MB.

For instructions on changing this limit, see Configuring the file cache.

  • Device Storage Used by Cache

The amount of space occupied by cached files on your mobile device.

For information on clearing the cache, see Clearing the cache.

  • View Server Certificate

The SSL certificate for the HCP Anywhere system.

You can view the certificate only if you were explicitly prompted to accept it when you registered the app. For more information, see Viewing the SSL certificate on Android.

  • License information

The end-user-license agreement and information about third-party software included in the app.

Configuring the file cache

By default, files are not available offline unless they are in the mobile app temporary storage. This temporary storage is known as the cache. You can set how much space is available in your cache.

If a file is larger than the cache, you cannot view its contents or upload it to HCP Anywhere.

The size of the file cache cannot be less than the size limit for individual files. If you select a value for the cache size limit that's less than the file size limit, the app automatically decreases the file size limit.

For information on the file size limit, see Configuring file size limit.

Procedure

  1. In the navigation menu, tap Settings.

  2. In the File Cache section, tap Cache Size Limit.

  3. In the list, select a new cache size limit.

If you select a limit that's less than the file size limit, an alert appears. The alert warns that the file size limit will be changed with the cache size limit.
  4. If an alert appears, tap OK.

Configuring file size limit

The HCP Anywhere mobile application allows you to set a size limit for files. This is a great tool for managing the amount of space the app uses. By default, the size limit is 10 MB.

Considerations
  • Files larger than the size limit cannot be uploaded to HCP Anywhere using the mobile app.
  • For a file that is larger than the size limit, you cannot download the file from the HCP Anywhere system. You can save the file to your local device, but no local copy will exist on the device while the file remains above the size limit.
  • If a locally saved file is above the size limit, you cannot view or update the file in the mobile app.
  • The size limit you set cannot be greater than the size limit for the file cache. If you select a value for the size limit that's greater than the size limit for the cache, the app automatically increases the size limit for the cache. For information on the cache size limit, see Configuring the file cache.

Procedure

  1. In the navigation menu, tap Settings.

  2. In the Device section, tap Upload/Download File Size Limit.

  3. In the list, select a size.

Configuring Wi-Fi only access

HCP Anywhere allows you to configure the app so that some of the more data-intensive activities can only be performed while connected to Wi-Fi. This is a great way to manage how much data the app is using.

While the Wi-Fi Only setting is enabled, you can do these activities only when connected to Wi-Fi:

  • Download file contents
  • Update the files that you've saved locally to your device
  • Upload files

Procedure

  1. In the navigation menu, tap Settings.

  2. In the Device section, tap Wi-Fi Only.

  3. In the top-right corner of the screen, turn the toggle on.

  4. Tap the back arrow to return to the Settings page.

Clearing the cache

When you view a file on the mobile app, the file is downloaded to the device and stored in temporary storage. This temporary storage is known as the cache.

Files in the cache use space on your device. On Android devices, you can clear the cache to free up space. Clearing the cache does not clear any locally saved files. Since locally saved files are always available, these files are also stored on the device, not in the cache.

Procedure

  1. In the navigation menu, tap Settings.

  2. In the File Cache section, tap Clear Cached Files.

The app deletes all cached files.

Handling Active Directory username changes

If the username for your Active Directory user account changes, you need to deregister and then reregister the mobile app. For information on doing this, see Disconnecting the Android app.

For the desktop application, you do need to explicitly change your username in this situation.

Disconnecting the Android app

  1. In the navigation menu, tap Settings.

  2. In the Device section, tap Deregister Device.

  3. In the prompt, tap OK.

  4. Tap OK.

About Android app notifications

On Android devices, the mobile app creates notifications in the Android Notification Drawer when:

  • You upload a file to the mobile app. When you tap one of these notifications, the app opens and displays the contents of the folder to which the file is being added.

Until you remove them, these notifications remain in the notification drawer after an upload has completed successfully or if the upload failed.

NoteThe mobile app can create a maximum of 49 notifications for files that you upload. When this limit is reached, because HCP Anywhere is unable to create additional notifications, you cannot add additional files to HCP Anywhere.
  • You update the contents of a locally saved file. The app creates one notification to track the progress of this operation, regardless of the number of files being updated.

If all files are successfully updated, this notification is automatically removed from the notification drawer. If one or more of the files failed to be downloaded, the notification remains.

To open the Android Notification Drawer, place your finger at the top of the device screen and swipe towards the bottom of the screen.

Viewing the SSL certificate on Android

Sometimes, during registration, you are prompted to accept an HCP Anywhere server certificate. On the Android mobile app, you can view this certificate.

For information on deleting the certificate, see Deleting the SSL certificate on Android.

NoteThe HCP Anywhere system configuration determines whether you are explicitly prompted to accept the certificate.

Procedure

  1. In the navigation menu, tap Settings.

  2. Tap View Server Certificate.

The app displays the contents of the certificate.

Deleting the SSL certificate on Android

If you were explicitly prompted to accept an HCP Anywhere server certificate when you registered the Android app, you can view and delete that certificate from the Settings screen in the app. You would typically delete the certificate if instructed to so by your HCP Anywhere administrator.

After deleting the certificate, you may be prompted again to accept a certificate for the HCP Anywhere system. You need to accept the certificate again to continue using the app.

NoteThe HCP Anywhere system configuration determines whether you are explicitly prompted to accept the certificate.

Procedure

  1. In the navigation menu, tap Settings.

  2. Tap View Server Certificate.

The app displays the contents of the certificate.
  3. Tap Delete.
