About this release

This is build 4.5.0.43 of the Hitachi Content Platform Anywhere (HCP Anywhere) software.

What's new

Release highlights for 4.5

This section describes what's new in release 4.5 of HCP Anywhere.

Hitachi Content Platform Anywhere for Microsoft Teams (HCP Anywhere for Teams)

Release 4.5 introduces HCP Anywhere for Teams. HCP Anywhere for Teams can be made available as an application in an organizations app catalog that users can then add to various Microsoft Teams channels. HCP Anywhere for Teams supports the following functions:

  • Log in using existing HCP Anywhere authentication methods
  • Add a new or existing HCP Anywhere folder into Teams for collaboration by members of the Teams channel
  • Add or delete members who have access to the HCP Anywhere team folder
  • Upload, download, rename, or delete files and folders
  • Bulk upload, download, or delete files
  • Upload multiple versions of the same file
  • Share links with other users

For information on using HCP Anywhere for Teams, see the HCP Anywhere User Help.

Hitachi Content Platform for cloud scale (HCP for cloud scale)

In addition to HCP, release 4.5 adds HCP for cloud scale as a supported storage provider. HCP for cloud scale is a software-defined object storage solution that is based on a massively parallel microservice architecture and is compatible with the Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3) application programming interface (API).

For information on configuring HCP for cloud scale as a storage provider, see the HCP Anywhere Administrator Help.

Support for Traditional Chinese

The HCP Anywhere User Portal, the macOS and Windows desktop applications, and HCP Anywhere User Help - Essentials are now available in Traditional Chinese.

Several bug fixes

This release includes several fixes for bugs and cybersecurity vulnerability issues.

Upgrade notes

You can upgrade an HCP Anywhere system to release v4.5 from release v2.0 or later. To upgrade from a release earlier than v2.0, you first need to upgrade to release v2.0. You cannot downgrade HCP Anywhere to a previous release.

Before upgrading

Before upgrading, ensure that all SSL server certificates for the HCP Anywhere system are valid. If any certificates are invalid, desktop and mobile applications will be unable to connect to the system.

If a user identified the HCP Anywhere system by IP address or by only the first part of the fully qualified domain name when registering the desktop application, the desktop application will be unable to connect to HCP Anywhere after the upgrade. In this case, the user needs to reconfigure the application to use the fully qualified domain name for the HCP Anywhere system.

Upgrade a system

  1. Retrieve the upgrade package (AW004_4.5.bin file) from the Hitachi Vantara support portal.

You need a Hitachi Vantara customer ID and password to access the Hitachi Vantara Portal.
  2. Upload and apply the upgrade package through the Management Console.

After you upload the upgrade package, you can view a list of all features included in the upgrade package.
NoteHCP Anywhere should not be upgraded at the same time as an HCP system it's connected to.

Upgrades to v4.5

This section describes the major impacts of upgrading HCP Anywhere to release 4.5.

HCP Anywhere v4.4 introduced the integration with Microsoft Office 365 for co-authoring with Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint online. Microsoft requires unique identifiers (unique IDs) for each file and folder in HCP Anywhere for the integration.

If you are upgrading from version 4.3.x or earlier to version 4.5 the core upgrade may take several hours, and extended upgrade will also take longer hours because HCP Anywhere will update the database with unique IDs.

If you are upgrading from any 4.4.x version to 4.5, extended upgrade will also be longer due to the bug fixes related to the assignment of unique IDs for files and folders in the HCP Anywhere database. These fixes help prevent potential issues or fix the issues if the database is already impacted.

The time taken to complete both phases of an upgrade depends on the size of the HCP Anywhere database, in particular, the number of object versions.

Note

For two-node systems, HCP Anywhere will be available during both the core and extended portions of an upgrade. Some new features will not be available until the extended upgrade is completed. For single-node systems, HCP Anywhere will go offline only during the core upgrade.

Upgrades from v3.0 or later to v4.5

This section describes the major impacts of upgrading HCP Anywhere from release v3.0 or later to release v4.5.

Brief interruption of services

Upgrading to v4.5 of HCP Anywhere can cause a brief interruption of services. For example, during an upgrade:

  • The User Portal and Management Console may be temporarily unavailable.
  • The HCP Anywhere applications may be temporarily unable to connect to the HCP Anywhere system.

Services typically resume after 5 to 10 minutes.

HDI device management

Beginning in release v4.0, HCP Anywhere no longer supports Hitachi Data Ingestor (HDI) device management. As part of this process, the HDI Devices page has been removed from the HCP Anywhere Management Console.

ImportantDo not upgrade to v4.5 if you use HCP Anywhere to manage HDI devices.

Upgrades from v2.1.2 or earlier to v4.5

This section describes the major impacts of upgrading HCP Anywhere from release v2.1.2 or earlier to release v4.5.

Note Read this section carefully before upgrading HCP Anywhere. The impact of upgrading from v2.1.2 or earlier to v4.5 can be significant.

TLS 1.2 enforcement

In release v4.5 of HCP Anywhere, Transport Layer Security (TLS) 1.2 connections are enforced by default. Although TLS 1.2 is more secure than previous releases, enforcing TLS 1.2 can have a serious impact on your users' HCP Anywhere applications.

Specifically, enforcing TLS 1.2 can prevent your users' HCP Anywhere applications from connecting to HCP Anywhere if the correct settings are not configured before the upgrade.

What applications are impacted

When TLS 1.2 is enforced, these applications may be unable to connect to HCP Anywhere:

  • HCP Anywhere Windows desktop applications release v2.1.2 or earlier
  • HCP Anywhere Outlook Add-ins release v2.1.2 or earlier
  • HCP Anywhere Android applications on any Android device using Android release 5.0
  • Hitachi Data Ingestor (HDI) devices release 6.1 or earlier
When applications are impacted

These applications are unable to connect to HCP Anywhere if all of these are true:

  • TLS 1.2 connections are being enforced. In release v4.3.2, you can reenable TLS 1.0 and 1.1 connections on the System Security Network page of the HCP Anywhere Management Console.
  • SSL is not terminated (also known as decrypted) at a network appliance (for example, a load balancer).
  • Additionally, for any Windows desktop application:

The desktop application is installed on a Windows 7 machine that does not have the DefaultSecureProtocols registry key configured to use TLS 1.2. On Windows 8.1 and 10, the DefaultSecureProtocols registry key is configured to use TLS 1.2 by default.

  • Additionally, for any Outlook Add-in:

The Outlook Add-in is installed on a Windows machine that does not have the SchUseStrongCrypto registry key configured to use TLS 1.2.

ImportantIf TLS 1.2 is preventing the Windows desktop application or the Outlook Add-in from connecting, either a deregistration error or a Could not create a secure TLS/SSL channel error is displayed.
Recovery (TLS 1.2)

If your users have any of the impacted applications, you can allow them to connect those applications to HCP Anywhere by doing one of these:

Option 1 (less secure)

Enable TLS 1.0 and 1.1 in the HCP Anywhere Management Console. However, you are now using TLS 1.0 and 1.1 connections, which have known security vulnerabilities.

Option 2 (less secure)

If you use a network appliance (for example, a load balancer) to direct traffic to HCP Anywhere, you can:

Procedure

  1. Verify that Enable TLS v1.0 and v1.1 is disabled in the HCP Anywhere Management Console.

  2. Verify that the network appliance supports TLS 1.0 and 1.1.

  3. Unencrypt SSL traffic at the network appliance.

Option 3 (more secure)

This option enables TLS 1.2 connections on the device that the HCP Anywhere application is installed. This option only applies to the:

  • HCP Anywhere Windows desktop application
  • Outlook Add-in

Procedure

  1. Verify that Enable TLS v1.0 and v1.1 is disabled.

  2. For the Windows desktop application, update your Window 7 machines to use TLS 1.2 connections for the desktop application by:

    1. Applying update KB3140245 to your Windows 7 machines.

    2. Setting the DefaultSecureProtocols registry key to 800 in the following registry paths:

      • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\WinHttp
      • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\WinHttp
    3. Setting the SecureProtocols registry key to A80 in the following registry paths:

      • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings
      • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings
An MSI for applying the DefaultSecureProtocols registry key and further instructions are available from Microsoft: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/3140245/update-to-enable-tls-1.1-and-tls-1.2-as-a-default-secure-protocols-in-winhttp-in-windows
  3. For the Windows Outlook Add-in, update your Window machines to use TLS 1.2 connections for the Add-in by setting the SchUseStrongCrypto registry key to 1 in the following registry paths:

    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\.NetFramework\v4.0.30319
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\.NetFramework\v4.0.30319

Further instructions are available from Microsoft: https://success.outsystems.com/Support/Enterprise_Customers/Maintenance_and_Operations/(.NET)_Enable_SSL_Protocols_for_your_Integrations_-_TLS_1.1_and_TLS_1.2

NoteYou can also prompt your users to upgrade their HCP Anywhere applications to the current release. For more information, see the HCP Anywhere Administrator Help.

User Portal URL changes

In release v3.0 and later of HCP Anywhere, the format of the User Portal URL is different than in the previous releases. If you use the User Portal URL for HTTP or HTTPS traffic (typically, in the form of load balancer rules) or have bookmarked User Portal pages, you need to update the User Portal URL in these places.

Below are the changes to the User Portal URL:

  • The root of the User Portal URL has changed from portal to userportal. Regardless of the User Portal page being accessed, the User Portal URL always begins like this:
    http://hcp-anywhere-system-name.domain-name/userportal
  • In addition to above change, most User Portal pages have a new URL structure. For example, the URL for the Files page used to end /home/files while in the new User Portal it ends /#/files.
Recovery (URL)

For a network appliance, update the HTTP or HTTPS traffic rules to use the new User Portal URL.

For any User Portal pages you have bookmarked, simply re-bookmark the pages in the new User Portal that correspond to your old bookmarks.

If the desktop application is not installed on the master VM image, when a user installs the desktop application on a VM, the memory of that VM fills, causing the VM to become inaccessible.

Third-party integrations

You can integrate the following third-party applications with HCP Anywhere.

Windows Active Directory

HCP Anywhere requires Windows Active Directory (AD) for user authentication. For HCP Anywhere to work with AD:

  • All AD domain controllers must be running one of these Windows server versions:
    • Windows Server 2019
    • Windows Server 2016
  • All AD domain controllers must support RC4-HMAC, AES-128, or AES256 bit encryption.
  • HCP Anywhere must have network connectivity to one or more domains in the AD forest.
NoteBy default, HCP Anywhere attempts to connect to every domain in the forest, except for domains in the forest with international names. HCP Anywhere does not support domains with international names.

If your AD infrastructure does not allow HCP Anywhere to connect to every domain in the forest, you can create a domain allowlist in the HCP Anywhere Management Console to specify the domains to which HCP Anywhere can connect. For information on domain allowlists, see the HCP Anywhere Administrator Help, which is available from the Management Console.

  • HCP Anywhere must be able to contact at least one DNS server that can resolve the AD domain name.
  • The AD time must be in sync with the HCP Anywhere system time. The recommended configuration is for HCP Anywhere and AD to use the same time server.
  • The AD infrastructure should have a robust and fault-tolerant configuration to ensure that AD users have continuous access to HCP Anywhere.

SAML identity providers

Secure Assertion Markup Language (SAML) is a protocol for authentication to web applications. HCP Anywhere is qualified for use with SAML versions:

  • 2.0

HCP Anywhere is qualified for use with Active Directory Federation Services (AD FS) versions:

  • AD FS for Windows Server 2019
  • AD FS for Windows Server 2016

For HCP Anywhere to be able use AD FS for authentication:

  • Users must have network connectivity to AD FS.
  • The AD FS time must be in sync with the Active Directory time. The recommended configuration is for AD and AD FS to use the same time server.

Antivirus servers

HCP Anywhere can be configured to use the Internet Content Adaptation Protocol (ICAP) to submit files added by file sync and share users to servers that perform virus scanning. HCP Anywhere does not synchronize files in which viruses are detected.

HCP Anywhere is qualified for use with these antivirus programs:

  • McAfee VirusScan Enterprise version 8.8 (Windows)
  • McAfee VirusScan Enterprise for Storage version 1.3
  • Symantec Protection Engine for Cloud Services versions 8.1
  • Trend Micro InterScan Security Virtual Appliance versions 6.5 SP2
  • Kaspersky Security for Storage 10.1

NAS servers

HCP Anywhere is qualified for mobilizing the contents of network-attached storage (NAS) shares from these types of NAS servers:

  • Hitachi Data Ingestor (HDI) 5.x and 6.x
  • Hitachi NAS Platform (HNAS) 11.x and 12.x
  • Unified NAS Series 4000 13.x

  • Microsoft Windows Server 2012R2, 2016, and 2019
  • EMC lsilon OneFS 8.1 or later and 9.0
  • EMC VNX
NoteHCP Anywhere is platform agnostic. For HCP Anywhere to mobilize data from a NAS server, the NAS server only needs to be using SMB 1.0.

macOS considerations

HCP Anywhere v4.5 integrates with macOS Finder Extensions to improve and provide easier access to the HCP Anywhere menu options in the Finder. Users of HCP Anywhere on macOS Mojave (10.14) might need to enable HCP Anywhere Finder extensions. To do this:

Procedure

  1. From the Apple menu, select System Preferences.

  2. From the System Preferences window, select Extensions.

  3. In the Extensions window, select All or Finder Extensions on the left pane.

  4. Select AW Finder Extensions.

Next steps

Rarely, with macOS Mojave, if the AW Finder Extensions option doesn't appear in the Extensions window, quit and restart the HCP Anywhere macOS application. Then follow the steps above.

Resolved issues

Issues resolved in release v4.5

The table below lists previously identified issues that were resolved in release v4.5 of HCP Anywhere. The issues are listed in order by reference number.

Reference numberArea affectedDescription
AW-16778Outlook Add-in, installation

The Outlook Add-in cannot be installed on 64-bit Outlook using a push install.

64-bit Outlook does not recognize the Outlook Add-in when the add-in was installed using a push install. In this case, the Control Panel shows that the add-in is installed on the computer, but Outlook does not recognize the add-in. This issue occurs because the Outlook Addin MSI file is not storing its registry keys for 64-bit applications.

Fix: This issue is resolved.

AW-27130Server - User PortalMobilization: Files/folders in read-only mobilized shares occasionally report full permissions.

When a User Portal share is read-only, you can either open files in read-only mode or download the files. Occasionally, the User Portal incorrectly suggests that you can rename or delete files or folders or perform other actions. (If you try, you cannot, which is correct.)

Fix: This issue is resolved.

AW-27755Server - desktop clientFiles restored to Team folder not synched to desktop client.

Files restored to a Team folder are visible in the User Portal but not the desktop client.

Fix: This issue is resolved.

AW-27825User Portal, Management User Interface - Mobile AccessNot all managers of Team folders are displayed in Management User Interface after a manager is deleted from AD.

After deleting a user with a manager role from Active Directory, all other managers are still active managers, but may not be displayed in the team folder list.

Fix: This issue is resolved.

AW-29586Server - desktop clientUser entries not read from Registry keys

The desktop client should read values from Registry keys and use them as variables (for example, in "$userdir\documents") but does not.

Fix: This issue is resolved. Registry keys are read and used correctly.

Known issues

Issues with workarounds

The table below lists known HCP Anywhere issues for which workarounds exist. The issues are listed in order by reference number.

Reference numberArea affectedDescription
AW-1055Desktop application, moves

With quota exceeded, moved file is deleted from other devices.

You can lower a user's storage quota to a size that's smaller than the amount of data that the user has already stored in HCP Anywhere. This causes the user to be over the user's storage quota. In this situation, the user cannot add any new files to HCP Anywhere.

While over the storage quota, if the user moves a file from one folder in the HCP Anywhere folder to another folder within the HCP Anywhere folder, the file is deleted from the HCP Anywhere system and from the user's other devices but not from the computer on which the file was moved. This happens because HCP Anywhere synchronizes the removal of the file from the original location but does not synchronize the addition of the file to its new location.

Workaround: To be able to move files, the user should do one of these:

  • Reduce the amount of storage used by deleting files from or moving files out of the HCP Anywhere folder.
  • Ask the HCP Anywhere administrator to increase the user's storage quota.
AW-3081ICAP server

ICAP connection alert is displayed by only one node.

When the HCP Anywhere system cannot connect to the ICAP server that it uses to scan files for viruses, the system displays an alert on the File Sync and Share Overview page in the Management Console. However, this alert is generated by only one node in the system. This means that depending on the node to which your Management Console session is connected, you might or might not see the alert.

Workaround: Check the Overview page alerts for both nodes. To do this:

  1. In a web browser, enter the URL for the Management Console in this format:
    https://node-front-end-IP-address:8000/admin
  2. To view the file sync and share Overview page, click File Sync and Share.
  3. Log out of the Management Console.
  4. Enter the URL for the Management Console, this time by specifying the front-end IP address for the other node in the system.
  5. To view the file sync and share Overview page, click File Sync and Share.
AW-5021System recovery

File synchronization fails after HCP Anywhere system undergoes recovery.

When an HCP Anywhere system is recovered after a serious hardware failure, a user's desktop applications may be unable to synchronize files with the system.

Workaround: To resume file synchronization, restart the desktop application.

AW-5576Exported filesystems

Exported filesystems cannot be imported until data has been migrated to HCP.

After creating an exported filesystem, if you import that filesystem before its data has been moved to HCP, users will be unable to view any of the data in the imported filesystem.

In this case, the Events tab for the device with the imported filesystem displays these errors:

Event ID:3842 Device 'device-name' encountered error 'KAQX10020' : 'Provisioning failure (keyword: cifscreate, id: KAQM08165-E)'
Event ID:3842 Device 'device-name' encountered error 'KAQX10008' : 'Namespace-sharing synchronization failure (missing data)'

Workaround: Verify that the exported filesystem has migrated its data before trying to import the filesystem. To do this, check Health Report tab for the device on which you created the exported filesystem.

If you've already created the imported filesystem, delete it. Then import the exported filesystem again after verifying that the data has been migrated.

AW-9312Mac desktop application, links

Sharing a link can open the wrong version of the application.

On a Mac, a user can install a new version of the HCP Anywhere application alongside an older version, rather than replacing the old version. While in this state, if the user shuts down the HCP Anywhere application and then uses the Services menu to attempt to share a file or folder, the old version of the application might be opened.

Workaround: Delete the old version of HCP Anywhere application.

This information has been added to the HCP Anywhere User Help.

AW-9374Desktop applications, application icon

Incorrect app icon is displayed after upgrade.

The desktop application icon was updated for release 2.0:

Old: GUID-F68E2AD7-3EA4-4168-B088-F86BB3F17C7B-low.png New: GUID-317625F5-7DFD-4C40-885C-544F4D2365A2-low.png

When a user upgrades the Windows desktop application to release 2.0, the user might see the old version of the icon in these places:

  • Start menu
  • Taskbar
  • Favorites menu in Windows Explorer

Workaround: To manually update the icon:

  1. Right-click the icon.
  2. From the menu, click Properties.
  3. Click Change Icon.
  4. Select the new icon and click OK.
AW-9496Management Console, NAS shares

Management Console does not display any NAS shares for a NAS server.

When you add a NAS server to the File Sync and Share Configuration Mobilized Data page in the Management Console, the page automatically displays the shares that the server exposes to anonymous users. If the server has several hundred of these shares, the page might not display any shares at all for the server.

Workaround: Use the Add Share (Manually) button to add the shares you want.

AW-9681User Portal on Google Chrome

User Portal is sometimes inaccessible through Google Chrome.

The User Portal might become inaccessible through Google Chrome if the HCP Anywhere system uses a self-signed SSL certificate.

This happens because Chrome does not permanently store security exceptions for websites. When a user returns to the User Portal and Chrome no longer has a security exception for it, Chrome assumes that the User Portal violates HTTP Strict Transport Security (HSTS) rules and prevents the user from accessing it.

Workaround: Delete the HSTS entry for the HCP Anywhere system from Chrome:

  1. In Google Chrome, go to chrome://net-internals/#hsts.
  2. In the Delete domain section, enter the domain name for your HCP Anywhere system and click the Delete button.
AW-10144Outlook Add-in, links

There is no option for converting file attachments to links when reply to or forwarding an email.

When replying to or forwarding an email, the option for converting a file attachment to a link does not appear in the Outlook ribbon.

Workaround: Configure Outlook to open replies and forwards in a new window. To do this:

  1. In Outlook, click the File tab.
  2. From the list that appears, click options.
  3. From the window that appears, click the Mail tab.
  4. In the Replies and forwards section, select Open replies and forwards in a new window.
  5. Click OK.
AW-11663Data exclusion, uploads

Files with prohibited extensions are not uploading when no longer prohibited.

In release 2.1, administrators can prevent certain files from being uploaded into HCP Anywhere by specifying prohibited file extensions. When a user tries to upload a file with a prohibited extension, the file fails to upload to the server. Instead, the file remains in the user's desktop client folder as an unsynced file.

With an application running version 2.1 of HCP Anywhere, the file automatically uploads to the server when the file extension is no longer prohibited. However, with a pre-2.1 application, the file does not automatically upload. Instead, the file remains unsynced.

Workaround: To upload the file, do one of these:

  1. Pause and then resume synchronization of the file on the desktop application.
  2. Restart the desktop application.
AW-12506Upgrades, Active Directory

Custom service principal names are removed after upgrade or system failure.

When an upgrade is applied to HCP Anywhere or HCP Anywhere experiences a system failure, the Active Directory computer account which is joined to HCP Anywhere is reset on the HCP Anywhere system. When HCP Anywhere resets the Active Directory computer account, any custom service principal names (SPNs) are removed from that computer account. This can prevent users from being able to authenticate with the HCP Anywhere system

Workaround: Reset the SPNs on the AD computer account which is joined to HCP Anywhere.

AW-13523Windows desktop application

On a Windows computer, the HCP Anywhere folder or an item in the HCP Anywhere folder cannot be opened, edited, or deleted.

The desktop application allows you to choose which files are saved locally to your computer and which files remain remotely in HCP Anywhere. When certain file types are remote files, Windows might prevent the file from being opened, edited, or deleted. For example, .iso files cannot be opened or mounted when they are remotely in HCP Anywhere.

Workaround: To open, edit, or delete the file, you need to first save the file locally. To save the file locally, do these:

  1. Right-click the file.
  2. In the menu, click Save locally.
AW-14757Windows desktop application, installation

Windows says the KB3033929 security update is already installed.

To use the Windows desktop application, the computer needs to have the KB3033929 security update installed. Occasionally, when installing the KB3033929 security update onto your computer, the computer says that the update is already installed even though the desktop application says it is not installed.

Workaround: To fix this issue, try these:

  • Restart your computer.
  • Uninstall and reinstall the security update.
  • If neither of these work, contact your IT department for additional assistance.
AW-15222Desktop applications, team folders

Team folder is displayed twice in desktop application.

In the desktop application, when you move a team folder into another collaborative folder (shared or team), the team folder is moved to the root of HCP Anywhere if you are the last manager of that team folder. This behavior is expected since there must always be at least one manager in each team folder. However, when the team folder is moved to the root of HCP Anywhere, a duplicate of the team folder is left within the collaborative folder in which the team folder was moved. In the duplicate filesystem, the files appear to be real but do not contain any data.

Workaround: Delete the duplicate filesystem.

AW-15980Windows desktop application, remote files, conflicts

Remote file conflicts are not detected in the desktop application.

In release 3.0 of the Windows desktop application, the application does not detect file conflicts if they are remote. This prevents the application from indicating that a file conflict is present. When the desktop application detects a file conflict, the application icon is badged with a red exclamation point (GUID-89B30443-9647-45E4-9133-D7868BF47DE2-low.png) and the file conflict is listed on the Conflicts page in the desktop application dashboard.

Workaround: You can view your file conflicts in the User Portal by doing these:

  1. Log in to the User Portal.
  2. Click your username.
  3. In the menu, click File conflicts.
AW-16180User Portal, uploads

Uploading a 10 GB or larger file to the User Portal results in an error.

On some browsers, uploading a file to the User Portal that is 10 GB or larger results in an error.

Workaround: To upload a file that is 10 GB or larger, you can:

  1. Upload the file using Google Chrome.
  2. Upload the file on Internet Explorer, Edge, Firefox, and Safari using Private Browsing mode.
  3. Add the file to the HCP Anywhere desktop application.
AW-16339Windows desktop application, installation

Windows desktop application installation fails due to User Account Control (UAC).

Attempting to install the Windows desktop application results in a Setup Failed error when:

  • You do not have administrator permissions on your computer, and
  • The user control account (UAC) is set to never notify

To see if you have the administrator role:

  1. In the Start menu, click Control Panel.
  2. Click User Accounts.
  3. Click Manage User Accounts.
  4. See if your user account is in the Administrator group.

To see if the user control account (UAC) is set to never notify:

  1. In the Start menu, click Control Panel.
  2. Click User Accounts.
  3. Click Change User Account Control Settings.
  4. See if the UAC is set to never notify.
  5. If you have the administrator role, you can set the UAC to never notify.

Important: After installing the desktop application, make sure to return the UAC to never notify to maintain your original security level. Setting the UAC to never notify requires you to reboot your computer in order for the setting to take effect.

Typically, your IT department configures these settings. Contact your IT department for additional assistance.

AW-17104Desktop application

Desktop application doesn't register team folder quota changes for previously rejected files.

When an administrator changes the quota of a team folder, any files that were previously rejected due to size will not automatically be uploaded to HCP Anywhere.

Workaround: To resolve this issue, restart the HCP Anywhere desktop application.

AW-17376Windows desktop application

Microsoft OneNote unexpectedly closes when OneNote file is edited by multiple people simultaneously.

When a file in your HCP Anywhere folder is open in OneNote, OneNote can unexpectedly close if the following are true:

  • The OneNote file is being edited by two or more people simultaneously
  • The file is not set as Saved locally in your desktop application

In this case, when the first person saves their changes for the file, the Windows desktop application attempts to make the other user's version of the file remote, which causes OneNote to close.

Workaround: To collaborate on a OneNote file with multiple people, save the file locally. To save a file locally:

  1. In your HCP Anywhere folder, right-click the OneNote file you want to save locally.
  2. In the menu, click Save locally.
AW-18879Edge application, Edge CLI

Edge CLI commands fail when the path in the command has spaces, is surrounded by quotes, and ends with a backslash (\).

When an Edge CLI command has a path that contains spaces, is surrounded by quotes, and ends with a backslash (\), the command returns the following error:

Could not get the directory name from the root filesystem's path

In this case, the command-line interface interprets the backslash as escaping the quotation marks at the end of the path, causing the command to fail.

Workaround: To resolve this issue, remove the backslash at the end of the path and retry the command.

AW-19369Desktop application, User Portal, self-signed certificates

The desktop application context menu opens the User Portal to a blank page on Firefox if HCP Anywhere is using a self-signed certificate.

If you open the User Portal using the desktop application context menu, the User Portal opens to a blank page when all of these are true:

  • The User Portal is opened in Firefox
  • The HCP Anywhere system is using a self-signed certificate
  • An exception for the self-signed certificate has not been stored for that Firefox session

Workaround: To view the User Portal page, refresh the browser and log in to the User Portal.

AW-19705Edge device

Mirrored Edge devices require reauthentication after system recovery if a folder path on the original Edge device has been changed.

When an administrator changes the path of a monitored folder on a mirror Edge device while a second mirror Edge device is turned off, the second mirror device cannot connect to the system if a system recovery was performed before the second mirror device was turned on.

Workaround: To resolve this issue, reauthenticate the second mirror Edge device.

AW-20500Edge device

On an Edge device, moving a home folder from one volume to another causes the Edge device to stop monitoring the folder.

When a home folder on an Edge device is moved from one volume on the Edge device to another, Edge stops monitoring the folder.

Workaround: To resolve this issue, move the folder from one volume to the other on the Device Management page of the HCP Anywhere Management Console.

AW-20593Management Console, Upgrades

Changes made to the branded EULA and favicon don't apply to the Management Console.

If an HCP Anywhere system has been updated to the latest version and that system includes a branded favicon and End User License Agreement (EULA) on its Management Console, the branded favicon and EULA do not appear in the Management Console.

Workaround: To resolve this issue, reupload the branded favicon and EULA to the Management Console.

AW-20611Edge device

Edge devices delete their database when a new user reauthenticates the device.

When an administrator tries to reauthenticate an Edge device that was registered by another administrator, the Edge device deletes its database.

Workaround: To resolve this issue, reregister the Edge device with the new administrator's credentials on the Windows Server.

AW-21878Edge device, Windows desktop application

Command-line shells can't modify files that haven't been stubbed yet.

When an administrator uses a command-line shell to modify a file on an Edge recovery device that hasn't been stubbed yet, the server fails to modify the file.

Workaround: Before you try to modify the file with the command-line shell, stub the file by navigating to the folder that the file is stored in.

AW-21920HCP Anywhere server, User Portal

Encrypted communication can't be established after HCP Anywhere upgrades to v4.1.

If the SSL certificate on the HCP Anywhere system is larger than 16 KB, devices can't establish encrypted communication with the HCP Anywhere server after the system upgrades to 4.1.

Workaround: If there is a load balancer in the network architecture that can perform SSL validation, enable SSL termination support in the Management Console. If there is no load balancer that can perform SSL validation, create a smaller SSL certificate for the HCP Anywhere system. For more information, see HCP Anywhere Administrator Help.

AW-22783Windows desktop application

Windows Security prevents Collect Diagnostics from running.

If you try to use the HCP Anywhere Collect Diagnostics option in the Windows Start menu, Windows Security blocks the feature from running.

Workaround: You can change the Windows Security settings to allow Collect Diagnostics to run on the desktop. To do this:

  1. In the Windows Start menu, select Windows Defender Security Center.

The Windows Defender Security Center window opens.

  2. In the Windows Defender Security Center window, select Virus & threat protection.

The Virus & threat protection page opens.

  3. In the Virus & threat protection page, select Ransomware protection.
  4. The Ransomware protection page opens.
  5. In the Controlled folder access section, click Allow an app through Controlled folder access.

The Allow an app through Controlled folder access page opens.

  6. Click Add an allowed app. Then enter awcli.exe.

Note: If Windows Security doesn't allow you to add exclusions to Controlled folder access, contact support.

AW-23330Mac desktop application

HCP Anywhere can't open files and folders in the Documents, Downloads, and Desktop folders.

If the HCP Anywhere Mac desktop application is on a device that is running on macOS Catalina, Apple prevents HCP Anywhere from opening files and folders in the Documents, Downloads, and Desktop folders.

Workaround: If you have admin privileges, you can give the HCP Anywhere application full disk access. If you don't have admin privileges, contact an administrator.

AW-23481Mac desktop application

HCP Anywhere contextual menu options appear twice after upgrading the Mac desktop application.

After a user upgrades the HCP Anywhere desktop application to the v4.3 version, the HCP Anywhere contextual menu appears twice when the user right clicks on a file or folder in the application.

Workaround: If you restart the application, the duplicate contextual menu disappears.

AW-26101Mac desktop application

Mac desktop application won't start for customers with customized Info.plist files.

For customers who customize the file Info.plist and distribute the updated HCP Anywhere macOS desktop application using an MDM solution such as Jamf, the macOS desktop application won't start. This is due to improved security requirements of macOS Mojave and Catalina to ensure that only trusted software is installed on a Mac. The macOS desktop application is submitted to Apple for notarization before it is released. Customizing the file Info.plist after the HCP Anywhere macOS desktop application has been notarized and released violates the security requirements.

Workaround: Distribute the HCP Anywhere macOS desktop application without customizing the file Info.plist.

AW-27568Server - Office Online ServerFailing to save changes to PowerPoint file can leave the file locked.

When you edit a PowerPoint ODP file, the changes may not be saved and you are locked out of the file for a time.

Workaround: You can save the ODP file to a PPTX file and edits are saved as expected.

AW-27628Client - Desktop UI

Restored Team folder contents are not synced to Desktop client.

If you, as a last manager, delete a team folder from the client, the team folder is restored on the client but the contents are not.

Workaround: Rename the team folder in the User Portal and it will reappear on the client.

AW-29778Server - Office Online ServerCannot rename Excel file in Office Online

In Microsoft Office Online, renaming an Excel file using the function Save As > Rename can unexpectedly fail.

Workaround: Reboot the Office Online server.

AW-29802Desktop application, Office 365 OutlookCannot create link for Outlook attachments created by drag and drop

When using Microsoft Outlook, if you try to create a link to a file by dragging the file into an email message, you receive instead the error "Unable to read attachment data for 'file'. Cannot convert attachment to link."

Workaround: Use the option Convert Attachments to upload the attachment to HCP Anywhere and create a link.

AW-29847Management Console, HCP Anywhere for TeamsUpdate to branded name of HCP Anywhere for Teams is not saved.

If you change the default name for the HCP Anywhere for Teams app by selecting File Sync and Share > Configuration > Branding, changing the name in the HCP Anywhere for MS Teams section, and then clicking Upload Settings, a message indicates that the settings are updated, but the name is not changed.

Workaround: After you make the change, click Upload and Preview, and then to finalize your changes click Update Settings.

Other known issues

The table below lists known issues in the current release of HCP Anywhere for which no workarounds exist. The issues are listed in order by reference number.

Reference numberArea affectedDescription
AW-3282Desktop application

Folder fails to be deleted if it contains files that are currently being uploaded to the HCP Anywhere system.

In the following scenario, when a user attempts to delete a folder, files in the folder are deleted but the folder itself remains:

  • The user creates a folder within the HCP Anywhere folder.
  • The user adds files to the newly created folder.
  • Before the newly added files finish synchronizing, the user deletes the folder.
AW-4667File access

Many concurrent requests for a large file can significantly slow file synchronization.

If several hundred users attempt to access a single large file at the same time, the HCP Anywhere system immediately services requests for these users. Requests for other files made by a second set of users are queued until the system has finished with the requests for the first set of users. File synchronization for the second set of users is paused during this period of time.

AW-5224Desktop and mobile applications on release 1.0

Incorrect error when trying to accept a collaborative folder invitation.

If a user has any desktop or mobile applications older than release 1.1, the user cannot accept invitations to shared folders. If the user receives and clicks on a link to join a shared folder, the User Portal displays an error message saying that the user does not have permission to access the User Portal. This is incorrect; the user has permission to access the User Portal, but cannot view or accept shared folder invitations until the user upgrades all of his or her devices.

AW-5957Active Directory, domain allowlist

HCP Anywhere connects to domain controllers that are not in allowlisted domains.

When using both AD domain allowlisting and domain controller overrides, HCP Anywhere will attempt to contact the domain controllers specified as overrides for Global Services even if those controllers belong to domains that are not in the allowlist.

AW-6191User Portal, file history

Misleading column header when viewing the access history of a file.

In the User Portal, users can view the access history of a file in the History for file window by using the Read access (shared links) and Read access (other) filters. When viewing the access history of a file, there is a column called Modified.

The Modified column does not actually display the times when the file was modified. Instead, the Modified column displays the times when the file was accessed.

AW-6212ICAP server

Incorrect filenames sent to virus scanning servers.

HCP Anywhere may send incorrect filenames to virus scanning servers. For example, the file example.txt may be sent as %2Fexample.txt. In this case, if the virus scanning server is configured to block any file called example.txt, the virus scanning server receives an unexpected filename and does not block the file.

AW-8676Mobilized shares, upload

Failed uploads to mobilized shares appear to succeed.

A user can continue to use pre-2.0 desktop and mobile applications with an HCP Anywhere system that's at release 2.0 or later. In this case, if the user has access to mobilized shares, the user cannot view or work with those shares with the out-of-date applications.

In a pre-2.0 application, a user can create a folder with the same name as a mobilized share. The operation appears to be successful, but the folder is not actually created or synchronized. This also occurs for any files that the user adds to the folder.

This information has been added to the HCP Anywhere User Help.

AW-9355Mac desktop application, translation

Japanese text not displayed correctly in registration wizard.

While the app language is set to Japanese, the text on the Cancel button in the registration wizard is incorrectly truncated. This issue occurs only on Mac OSX 10.9.4.

AW-9433Audit, mobilized share

No search results during audit of mobilized share.

While auditing a mobilized share, an administrator can view any files the user adds to the share. However, searches for files in the mobilized share return no results.

AW-9590Mac desktop application

Remote change to an opened file causes the file to be saved to a new location.

In the Mac desktop application, when a remote change is made to a file that is open, the desktop application forces you to save the local file to a new location on your computer.

AW-10111Outlook Add-in, links

Calendar files incorrectly converting to links.

When converting a calender file (.ics) attachment to a link, HCP Anywhere converts each image in the calendar file to its own separate link, instead of converting the calender file to a single link.

AW-11411Reporting API

Incorrect user reported as uploading files to a folder shared using a link.

When an administrator runs an ownedModifications audit report, the report incorrectly returns information on files uploaded to folders shared using links. Instead of returning the actual user who uploaded the file to the folder, the report displays that the file was uploaded by the owner of the folder.

AW-11412Management Console, registered users

Incorrect information displayed in Management Console when new users register using a desktop or mobile application.

In release 2.1, new users can register their HCP Anywhere accounts through the User Portal or any of the HCP Anywhere applications (the desktop client, mobile application, or Outlook Add-in). On the Registered Users page in the Management Console, administrators can view a user's registered devices.

When a new user registers an HCP Anywhere account using one of the applications, the Registered Users page incorrectly shows that the user registered using both the User Portal and the application.

AW-13734Desktop applications, backup

Folder in the desktop application has the backup icon.

The desktop application allows you to store files on the desktop application or back up folders outside the desktop application. When you move a backup folder into the desktop application, the folder incorrectly remains badged with the backup icon although it is no longer being backed up.

AW-14277User Portal, login

Login fails on BlackBerry device due to prefilled username and password.

Typically, when you log in to a website for the first time, the browser stores your username and password. Consequently, the next time you access the website, your username and password is pre-filled into the login page for you.

If you attempt to log in to the User Portal on a BlackBerry® device with a username and password that has been pre-filled into the login page, the login fails. To log in to the User Portal on a BlackBerry® device, you need to manually enter your username and password.

AW-14699Collaborative folders, group membership

Group membership is not being updated.

You can update the membership of groups in a collaborative folder using the Sync membership button in the Manage Shared Folder window. This searches Active Directory for any changes to the group membership. If changes are detected (for example, a user was added or deleted from the group), those changes are made in the collaborative folder. However, the Sync membership button does not update the collaborative folder with any changes that have occurred in Active Directory within the 60 seconds prior to clicking on the button.

AW-15049Translations

Text no longer displayed in correct language.

In release 3.0, a number of languages are no longer supported. When you upgrade an application that is configured with a language that is no longer supported, the display language is changed to English.

AW-15080Single-node VM systems

Connection refused to single-node VM system with a disconnected back-end network.

After rebooting a single-node VM system with a disconnected backend network, attempting to SSH into the system results in a Connection refused error.

AW-15143Collaborative folders, group membership

In a collaborative folder, member roles are not changed when a group role is changed.

When you invite a group to a collaborative folder, HCP Anywhere tracks the group for you. If someone is added to the group in Active Directory, that person is also invited to the collaborative folder. When the role of a group in a collaborative folder is changed, the roles of any existing folder members of the group are not changed. The group role only applies to folder members who are invited to the folder after the role has been set.

AW-15234Windows desktop application, installs, upgrades

Cannot install or upgrade to version 3.0 of the desktop application on 32-bit Windows machine.

Release 3.0 and later of the Windows desktop application does support 32-bit Windows machines. If you attempt to install the desktop application on a 32-bit Windows machine, the installation fails. If you attempt to upgrade an older desktop application to release 3.0 on a 32-bit machine:

  • The upgrade fails.
  • An upgrade prompt is displayed every time your authentication token for the desktop application expires. By default, authentication tokens for the desktop application expire every 7 days. However, this expiration time can be adjusted in the HCP Anywhere Management Console.

In both the installation and upgrade scenarios, the failure message describes that 32-bit machines are not supported.

AW-15466Collaborative folder, file activity

When a collaborative folder is deleted, its activity can no longer be viewed.

When a collaborative folder is deleted, its activity can no longer be viewed. The activity of an existing collaborative can be viewed in the User Portal or by an administrator with the Audit role in the Management Console.

AW-16183NAS shares

Management Console displays an Internal Server Error due to NAS share with non-ASCII characters.

The HCP Anywhere Management Console displays a 500 Internal Server Error error message on the Mobilized Data page when the system detects a NAS share with non-ASCII characters in its name.

AW-17780Profiles, client settings

The Client settings are not available in the profile creation wizard.

In release 3.1, profiles contain the desktop application and Outlook Add-in settings in a new Clients tab. The options on the Clients tab allow administrators to configure application settings for their users, including whether alerts are enabled, whether locked files are synced using VSS, and how Outlook Add-in file collisions are resolved. Although the Clients tab appears in existing profiles, it does not appear in the profile creation wizard.

AW-18075Backup, recovery

Deleted backup files and folders cannot be downloaded or restored.

The desktop application includes a backup feature. The backup feature allows users or administrators to perform one-way backups (data is uploaded to the HCP Anywhere server but does not sync to other HCP Anywhere applications) of user data.

Typically, backup data can be downloaded and restored in the User Portal. However, if a backup file or folder is deleted, there is no way to download or restore that deleted content from HCP Anywhere.

AW-18243Windows desktop application, cache

After the Windows desktop application starts, the cache size is temporarily incorrect on the Settings page.

After the Windows desktop application starts, the cache size on the Settings page of the desktop application dashboard incorrectly appears as an extraordinarily high number instead of the actual cache size. The cache is a temporary storage space for remote files that have been recently downloaded. This issue resolves itself after the desktop application finishes its startup processing, which mainly involves syncing new files to and from the HCP Anywhere system.

AW-18280User Portal

Uploading a file on Google Chrome changes the file name to ....

On Windows, uploading a file to the User Portal in Google Chrome changes the file name to .... Hovering the mouse over the file displays the correct name.

AW-18349Collaborative folder, file versioning

In a collaborative folder, the Files and Files Activity pages display different file version information.

When you join a collaborative folder, you can view the versions of each file in the folder on the Files and Files Activity pages. However, these two pages display slightly different file version information. On the Files page, you can only view a previous version of a file if it was created while you were a member of the folder. On the Files Activity page, you can view all the available versions of each file, even versions created before you joined the folder.
