Release highlights for v9.0
HCP v9.0 includes several new features, described next.
The release also fixes issues found in previous releases. For more information, see Issues resolved in this release.
HCP v9.0 introduces support for the next generation of HCP server platforms, the HCP G11. The HCP G11 server is the successor to the HCP G10.
The HCP G11 provides feature parity with the HCP G10, supporting SAN-attached, internal-disk, and all-flash (with or without SAN-attached) storage configurations.
The HCP G11 is based on the QuantaGrid™ D52BQ-2U model, offering twelve 3.5” drive slots in the front cage, and two 2.5” drive slots in the rear cage for acceleration in HDD internal-disk configurations. Unlike the HCP G10, the HCP G11 also features hardware RAID in the rear cage. The chassis design enables more efficient hardware servicing.
The HCP G11 networking options match those of the HCP G10. HCP continues to offer 1 GB and 10 GB configurations, with Base-T and SFP+, in similar configurations to the HCP G10.
Additionally, the internal components of the HCP G11 server have been refreshed:
- Intel® Xeon® Silver 4210 (Cascade Lake) CPU, DDR4 memory in four distinct memory size options (64 GB/node, 256 GB/node, 384 GB/node and a 768 GB/node all-flash node).
- QCT QS-3516B RAID controller, offering RAID hardware for both the front- and the rear-cage drives.
- The HBA card has been upgraded to a Gen6 LPe32002, dual-port 32 GB FC card, offering port-level MPIO capabilities.
- Support for a larger SSD drive option in all-flash configurations, a 3.84 TB SSD drive, which brings the raw internal drive capacity to 46 TB in a RAID6 (10+2) configuration.
HCP v9.0 continues to support the same generations of servers as HCP 8.x, including HCP G10 generation systems, as well as Hitachi Compute Rack CR210H (HCP 500 and HCP 500XL architectures) and Hitachi Compute Rack CR220S (HCP 300 architecture) servers, up to the end-of-support life of these server generations. HCP G11 servers can be used as an Autonomic Technology Refresh (ATR) option to clusters that include Hitachi CR210H, Hitachi CR220S, or HCP G10 servers.
HCP v9.0 offers feature parity with HCP 8.x when deployed in VMware ESXi™ and Linux KVM based systems.
HCP v9.0 introduces support for balancing of HCP S Series Nodes through the S Series Balancing service.
The S Series Balancing service is a configurable service that balances object data across S Series Nodes in the same storage pool. The service ensures that the percent of space used across S Series Nodes in a pool remains roughly equivalent. The service is particularly useful when one or more S Series Nodes in the same storage pool is added to, removed from, or retired from an HCP system.
The S Series Balancing service is included in the HCP Default Schedule. However, it remains idle until storage pools are configured to take advantage of the service.
To ensure optimal system performance in deployments with S Series storage pools that include multiple S Series Nodes, you need to add the service to your active service schedule.

Upgrade notes
You can upgrade an HCP system to version 9.x only from version 8.x. You cannot downgrade HCP to an earlier version.
You must have at least 32 GB of RAM per node to use new software features introduced in HCP version 9.x. While you can upgrade an HCP system to version 9.x with a minimum of 12 GB of RAM per node and receive the patches and bug fixes associated with the upgrade, the system cannot use the new software features in the release. Inadequate RAM causes performance degradation and can negatively affect system stability. If you have less than 32 GB RAM per node and would like to upgrade to this release, contact your Hitachi Vantara account team.
When upgrading the HCP software, ensure that the new version is compatible with the currently installed version of the Appliance operating system. If it isn’t, upgrade the OS at the same time.
HCP upgrades can occur with the system either online or offline. During an online upgrade, the system remains available to users and applications. Offline upgrades are faster than online upgrades, but the system is unavailable while the upgrade is in progress. Work with the customer to determine which type of upgrade is better for them.

Third-party integrations
The following third party applications have been tested and proven to work with HCP. Hitachi Vantara does not endorse any of the applications listed below, nor does Hitachi Vantara perform ongoing qualification with subsequent releases of the applications or HCP. Use these and other third party applications at your own risk.
Hitachi API for Amazon S3 tools
These tools are qualified for use with the Hitachi API for Amazon S3:
- CloudBerry Explorer (does not support multipart upload)
- CloudBerry Explorer PRO (for HCP multipart upload, requires using an Amazon S3 compatible account instead of an Hitachi account; for CloudBerry internal chunking, requires versioning to be enabled on the target bucket)
- Cyberduck
- DragonDisk
- s3cmd
- s3curl
- s3fs-c (works only with versioning enabled on the target bucket)
Mail servers
These mail servers are qualified for use with the SMTP protocol:
- Microsoft Exchange 2010 (64 bit)
- Microsoft Exchange 2013

NDMP backup applications
These NDMP backup applications are qualified for use with HCP:
- Hitachi Data Protection Suite 8.0 SP4 (CommVault® Simpana® 8.0)
- Symantec® NetBackup® 7 — To use NetBackup with an HCP system:
- Configure NDMP to require user authentication (that is, select either the Allow username/pwd authenticated operations or Allow digest authenticated operations option in the NDMP protocol panel for the default namespace in the Tenant Management Console).
- Configure NetBackup to send the following directive with the list of backup paths:
set TYPE=openPGP
Windows Active Directory
HCP is compatible with Active Directory on servers running Windows Server 2012 R2 or Windows Server 2016. In either case, all domain controllers in the forest HCP uses for user authentication must minimally be at the 2012 R2 functional level.
RADIUS protocols
HCP supports the following RADIUS protocols:
- CHAP
- EAPMD5

Server memory
