Licensing


A license specifies the amount of storage and the HCP features that you can use. The storage can either be on HCP and S Seriess or on an extended storage tier. Licenses are available for all system configurations (RAIN, SAIN, and VM).

All HCP systems are required to have a basic or premium license. The default for a newly installed systems is to come with a basic license and an extended license. The default basic license lets you use two terabytes of HCP system and S Series storage. The default extended storage license lets you tier two terabytes of data to extended storage. You can request to have other licenses added upon installation.

If a basic, premium, or extended storage license is exceeded or expires, a warning appears on the System Management Console Overview page under System Status. Monitoring mechanisms such as: syslog, system log messages, and SNMP send reminders every twenty four hours asking the system administrator to upload a new storage license. You need to get a new basic or premium license to increase your storage capacity. You need to get a new extended license to increase your tiering capacity.

In HCP RAIN systems with a data protection level (DPL) of two, object copies do not take up storage license space. For example, if you have two terrabytes of DPL 2 objects, you have only used one terrabyte of your storage license.

If the HCP system serial number changes, a new license with an updated serial number must be uploaded.

Viewing a license


To view your licenses, go to the StorageLicenses page of the System Management Console. From there, you can monitor your current license and the license history. The page contains the following information about your current license:

Type — Is the type of license that is used. The possible types are:

oBasic

oPremium

oExtended

HCP system serial number — Is the serial number for the HCP system.

Capacity — Is the amount of storage capacity that the license provides.

Remaining — Is the amount of storage capacity on the license that is unused.

Expiration date — Is the date that the license expires. There may not be an expiration date.

Status — Describes the current state of the storage license. The possible values are:

oOK — The storage license has not been exceeded or expired.

oStorage license has expiredThe storage license is out of date. Even if the storage license capacity hasn’t been exceeded, a new license needs to be uploaded if the current one expires.

oStorage license is not a valid license for this system — The storage license serial number does not match the HCP system serial number. This only occurs if the HCP system serial number changes during an upgrade, but, if it happens, a new license with an updated system serial number must be uploaded.

oUsage has exceeded license capacity — The storage capacity of the basic, premium, or extended license has been exceeded. If the storage space of a license has been exceeded, a new license with a larger amount of storage capacity must be uploaded to replace the current one.

The License History panel keeps a record of all licenses uploaded to the system. If a license is uploaded, expires, is in danger of being exceeded, or is exceeded, the event is visible in the License History panel. Click on any event in the panel to see more information about it.

Uploading a license


To upload a new storage license:

1.On the StorageLicenses page, click on Add License.

2.In the Add license wizard window, in the Enter license key below field, type your license key string.

3.Click on Next.

4.Review your license information.

5.Click on Finish.
