Configuring a datastore
You can configure a new Virtual Machine File System (VMFS) datastore to create a logical container for virtual machine files. When creating a datastore, UCP Advisor automatically creates an associated logical unit on the storage device. If you delete the datastore, you must also delete its associated logical unit.
You can configure a datastore from the system summary view or from the datastore storage detail view for an individual storage system.
Before you begin
- Complete the following vCenter-related tasks:
- Register vCenter. See Registering vCenter.
- Attach vCenter to UCP system. See Attaching a vCenter to a UCP system.
- Add vCenter users as local UCP Advisor users or add Active Directory and grant the
UcpAdvisorStorageAdmin
role or theucpAdmin
role. See Adding vCenter users to UCP Advisor. - Log on to UCP Advisor with a valid vCenter credentials.
- Onboard the storage device to the UCP Advisor inventory.
- Configure the storage device zoning and host groups.
Procedure
Browse to the system where you want to create and provision a datastore, and then click Configure Datastore.
For Name and Capacity, enter the following:
Datastore Name
Enter a name for the datastore. The maximum length is 32 characters.
Datastore Capacity
Enter the capacity in GBs as an integer.
Single or Multiple Datastore Creation
Select the single or multiple datastore creation option.
Number of Datastores
For multiple datastores only, enter the number of datastores as an integer that are to be created and provisioned.
Datastore Name Prefix
For multiple datastores only, enter the prefix to the datastore name.
Initial Datastore Number
For multiple datastores only, enter the number for the initial datastore name.
For Storage Configuration, enter the following:
Storage System
Select a storage device from the list.
Storage pool
Select a storage pool from the list.
Resource Group
(Optional) Select a resource group from the list.
Capacity Saving Mode
Select a capacity saving mode from three options:
- Disabled
- Compression
- Deduplication & Compression
The following storage systems support capacity saving mode:
- VSP 5100, 5500, 5100H, 5500H
- VSP G1000, G/F1500
- VSP Fx00 models
- VSP Gx00 models
- VSP Gx00 models with NAS module
- VSP N400, N600, N800
- VSP Ex00
For Host or Cluster, select an ESXi host or cluster.
(Optional) You can choose specific host groups for logical unit presentation within selected hosts or clusters:Select hosts or clusters, and then click Advanced Options.
Select the host groups within each host or cluster for logical unit presentation.
For ALUA Mode (optional), click the box to enable ALUA mode or leave unchecked to disable ALUA mode.
Click Submit.
