    • Virtual Storage Platform 5600 (VSP 5600)

Answer

There are Customer Restrictions while a Data In Place Upgrade is underway or paused.  While an Array upgrade is in progress the following changes and maintenance are allowed and disallowed.

Changes and Maintenance that are Allowed:

  • CE Replacement of Failed or Failing Components.
  • Pair Operations (Split, Suspend, Pair Delete) on EXISTING LDEVs in existing relationships.  No new LDEVs should be added to replication until the Upgrade is fully completed.

Not Allowed without Approval from Support:
Any changes to the Configuration including (but not limited to):

  • Adding new Hosts.
  • Creating/Provision Host Groups.
  • Changing Host Group Attributes (Members, Provision new WWN's in Host Group, Host Mode, Host Mode Option, etc).
  • Changing Provisioning within a Host Group (eg. Adding or removing LUNs in an Existing Host/Host Group).
  • Changing Port Attributes (Topology, Fabric on/off, Speed, Security, Type, Target, Ini, External, Universal).
  • Adding External Storage.
  • Adding External Port/Path.
  • Adding External LUNs.
  • Installing new Disks/Capacity.
  • Adding Capacity to a Pool (Pool Expansion).
  • Adding new PG.
  • Changing Pool Attributes.
  • Microcode Upgrades.
  • Creating New LDEVs.
  • Removing or moving  Capacity (Pool Shrink, Pool Expansion).
  • De-installing any Hardware.
  • Installing any Hardware.
  • Deleting LDEVs.
  • Formatting Volumes.
  • LDEV Ownership Migration.
  • Volume/LDEV Expansion.
  • Create or Delete Pool.
  • Enable or Disable Capacity Savings.
  • Pin Track Removal.
  • Creating new JNL.
  • Changing JNL.
  • New Pair Operations.
  • Any other operations not specifically listed as allowed above.

Once the Upgrade is fully completed (all CTL are of same type, Upgrade is complete), then the customer may resume all normally allowed functions.

Additional Notes

An Upgrade is done in one maintenance window, and the restrictions apply while the upgrade is performed.

An Upgrade is paused because the customer cannot provide a long enough maintenance window to perform the entire upgrade.  Restrictions apply during the maintenance window and the time while the upgrade is paused.

It may be desirable to change the password of the accounts used to do maintenance to prevent the customer from making changes during this time, especcialy if the upgrade is paused without completing.
