Objective

Tips to successfully upgrade HCS.

Environment

  • Hitachi Command Suite

Procedure

  1. Download the "Hitachi Command Suite Installation and Configuration Guide" which explains the upgrade process.
    1. HCS_v8_7_0_Installation_Configuration_Guide_MK-90HC173-27.pdf

  2. Download the HCS All-In-One Installer
    1. support.hitachivantara.com > Downloads > Command Suite
    2. Once downloaded, you MUST check that the MD5 matches the MD5 from the Support Portal.  This is an extremely important concept.  Every ISO image that you download should have the MD5 checksum validated AT THE DESTINATION before use.
  3. Delete the browser cache on the HCS server.
  4. Reboot the HCS server.
  5. Stop/disable ALL anti-virus software or security/monitoring software on the HCS server.  If you cannot stop or disable, please remove the anti-virus software.
  6. Stop all HCS services.
    1. Stop all HCS services:
      <installation Directory>\HiCommand\Base64\bin\hcmds64srv.exe /stop
  7. Stop the RAID Agents using the following command:
    \Program Files (x86)\HiCommand\TuningManager\jp1pc\tools\jpcstop all
  8. Make sure slpd.exe is not running in Windows Task Manager, and the service (Service Location Protocol) is in a stopped state.  Ensure there are no other tasks running.
  9. For HUS arrays running Storage Navigator Modular 2 (SNM2), shutdown the SNM2 services.
  10. Place the HCS ISO on to the local drive of the HCS server...it must not be a network drive.  From the installation media, navigate to the HCS folder and run the prereqchk.exe utility.  This appears to start the installation process, but it only scans the server and provides a report on any issues that need to be addressed, ie required memory, disk space, etc., prior to performing the actual upgrade.  Correct any warnings, and then cycle the HCS services (if you power-cycle the HCS server, ensure you stop/disable any anti-virus software or monitoring software on the HCS server).
  11. Right-click "Run as Administrator" to run the All-In-One Installer.

Additional Notes

  • Agents are not upgraded by upgrading HCS. HDvM agent install binaries can be downloaded from HCS GUI after upgrade (Tools/Download). Upgrade agents after the Hitachi Device Manager (HDvM) upgrade is complete.
  • "HCS Install Using The All-In-One Installer" KB article: HCS install using the All-in-One Installer
  • If upgrading the array microcode too, first upgrade HCS, then upgrade the microcode
