Working with S Series storage pools

HCP uses S Series storage pools to represent logical groups of storage components that can be used as storage tiers. Each storage pool consists of one or more storage components that are used to access the same type of storage.

When storing objects on S Series Nodes, HCP uses all the storage in all the S Series Nodes that are contained in the storage pools. The total capacity of a given storage pool is the total amount of space remaining in all S Series Nodes connected to the HCP system.

You use the Storage section of the System Management Console to create, modify, manage, delete, and retire S Series storage pools. You also use the Storage section to monitor the health, availability, capacity, and usage of all the S Series Nodes associated with the storage pool.

Creating an S Series storage pool

Use the Create Pool wizard on the Storage page to create and configure a storage pool.

Before you begin

To create an S Series storage pool, you need the administrator role.

Procedure

  1. In the top-level menu of the System Management Console, select Storage. The Storage page opens to the Overview tab.

  2. Click the Pools tab.

  3. Click Create Pool.

    The Get Started wizard opens.

  4. In the Pools field, select HCP S Series.

  5. Click Go.

    The Create Pool wizard opens.

  6. In the Name field, type a name for the storage pool.

  7. Optional: In the Description field, type a description for the storage pool.

  8. Click Next.

    The Allocation page opens.

  9. Select all the storage components that you want to allocate to the pool.

  10. To compress object data that is stored in the buckets in the storage pool, select Compress data at rest.

  11. To encrypt object data that is stored in the buckets in the storage pool, select Encrypt data at rest. If encryption is disabled for the system, this option is not visible.

  12. Click Next.

    The Review page opens.

  13. Take one of the following actions:

    • If the S Series storage pool configuration is correct, click Finish.

    • If the S Series storage pool configuration information is not correct:

      1. Use the Previous and Next buttons to navigate through the wizard and change any incorrect settings.
      2. When you are finished making changes, navigate back to the Review page and click Finish.

Modifying an S Series storage pool

Use the Storage Pools page to view and modify the configuration of any S Series storage pool.

Use the Storage Pools page to perform the following tasks:

  • Change one or more configuration settings that were specified when the pool was created.
  • Add one or more storage component buckets to an S Series storage pool.
  • Delete one or more buckets from an S Series storage pool.

Modifying the settings of an S Series storage pool

Use the Storage Pools page to modify the configuration settings of an S Series storage pool.

Before you begin

To modify an S Series storage pool, you need the administrator role.

Procedure

  1. Click Storage Pools. The Pools page opens.

  2. Click the table row corresponding to the name of the pool that you want to modify.

    Note

To enable balancing on an S Series storage pool, you must choose a pool that has multiple S Series storage components.

The Overview page for the pool that you selected opens.

  3. Click the Setting tab.

  4. Modify the pool settings.

  5. Click Update Settings.

Adding buckets to an S Series storage pool

Use the Storage Pools page to add buckets to an existing S Series storage pool.

Before you begin

To add buckets to an S Series storage pool, you need the administrator role.

Procedure

  1. On the Storage Pools page, click the table row corresponding to the name of the pool to which you want to add one or more buckets.

The Overview page for the pool that you selected opens.

  2. Click the Buckets tab.

  3. Select the buckets that you want to add to the storage pool.

You cannot select buckets that are used by other storage pools.

  4. Click Update Settings.

Deleting buckets from an S Series storage pool

Use the Storage Pools page to delete buckets from an S Series storage pool.

Deleting buckets from an S Series storage pool does not remove them from the HCP system. S Series Node buckets that are not associated with a pool can be added to a pool.

Before you begin

To delete buckets from an S Series storage pool, you need the administrator role.

Procedure

  1. On the Storage Pools, click the table row corresponding to the name of the pool from which you want to delete buckets.

The Overview page for the pool that you selected opens.

  2. Click the Buckets tab.

  3. Clear the buckets that you want to delete from the storage pool.

  4. Click Update Settings.

Deleting an S Series storage pool

If the storage that is represented by an S Series storage pool is not currently used to store objects in any namespaces defined on the HCP system, you can delete the storage pool.

In contrast, if the storage that is represented by an S Series storage pool is used to store object data, you must first retire the storage pool by migrating all the data to another location.

Procedure

  1. In the System Management Console, click Storage Pools.

    The Storage Pools page opens.
  2. Click the delete control beside the unused storage pool that you want to delete.

The Confirm: Delete dialog box opens.

  3. Click Delete.
