Overview

Before you deploy Hitachi UCP Advisor, you must verify the prerequisites, complete the task checklist, configure the dependencies, and download the ISO media bundle.

Concept and architecture

The software and hardware components described in this section comprise the UCP Advisor architecture.

UCP Advisor is distributed in an ISO media bundle and consists of two UCP Advisor virtual machine components:

  • UCP Advisor software
  • Advisor Gateway OVA

The VMs are deployed on the management node. The following diagram shows the UCP Advisor components.

The following figure shows the management node, and its relation to the architecture and systems interacting with UCP Advisor in the converged infrastructure. These devices reside in the same physical rack.

The UCP converged infrastructure appliance is shown in the following figure. This figure shows a fully populated converged appliance.

Hardware and software

A description of the hardware and software components within the UCP Advisor architecture follows.

Supported hardware

The list of hardware requirements for UCP Advisor to work efficiently is as follows:

  • Fully deployed and configured UCP converged infrastructure or hyperconverged infrastructure
  • Management node for UCP Advisor component deployment

UCP converged infrastructure and hyperconverged infrastructure

The UCP Advisor converged infrastructure and hyperconverged infrastructure contains various hardware components.

The following figure shows the UCP converged infrastructure appliance. The storage, network, and compute components are contained inside.

Management node

The UCP Advisor controller VM should be deployed on one or more management nodes and have network connectivity to the UCP Advisor Gateway VM. The UCP Advisor Gateway VM needs a direct connection to all of the converged infrastructure management and Fibre Channel networks.

The UCP Advisor software must be deployed on clustered server nodes (two nodes). The management node requires a dual connection to ensure full connectivity into the UCP infrastructure. The following figure shows the cluster configuration.

The different modes of deploying the management nodes are:

  • Customer-supplied node (already existing management node in which UCP Advisor and the necessary components can be installed).
  • Customer uses a Hitachi-supplied DS120 management node.
  • Optional configuration where the UCP Advisor Gateway VM is installed on the compute node, while the UCP Advisor controller VM resides on the customer management node.

The management node DS120 front view is shown in the following figure.

UCP Advisor should be deployed on VMware high availability clustered servers and may coexist with nonmission-critical applications. UCP Advisor should not manage the servers that it is deployed on, with the exception of the UCP Advisor Gateway VM.

NoteUCP Advisor Gateway VM must be migrated to another server before performing disruptive operations (such as power control and firmware update) if it is not residing on the management node. Once the disruptive operation is completed, the UCP Advisor Gateway VM should be migrated back to the original server to retain command device configuration.

The software architecture and how it is deployed in a management node is shown in the following figure.

VMware ESXi

VMware ESXi is an enterprise-class, type-1 hypervisor developed by VMware for deploying and serving virtual computers.

As a type-1 hypervisor, ESXi is not a software application that is installed in an operating system. Instead, it includes and integrates vital OS components, such as a kernel.

ESXi 6.5 U1 is the minimum required version for deployment on one or more management nodes. The UCP Advisor VMs are deployed on the ESXi 6.5 U1 hypervisor or cluster when configured. The following figure shows the KVM console view when logged in to the ESXi hypervisor.

VMware vCenter Server Appliance

The VMware vCenter Server Appliance (vCSA) enables you to centrally manage virtual machines and ESXi hosts.

vSphere client is used to access the vCenter server and ultimately manage ESXi servers.

If you choose to use your own vCSA, then UCP Advisor can be deployed there.

UCP Advisor is deployed via plugin on vCSA. When it is installed, it appears as an icon in the VMware vCenter user interface. The following figure shows the vCSA 6.5 user interface.

VMware vRealize Orchestrator

VMware vRealize Orchestrator automates complex IT processes by simplifying the automation of complex IT tasks.

By integrating VMware vRealize Orchestrator with vRealize Suite and vCloud Suite, you improve service delivery efficiency, operational management, and IT agility. The following figure shows the vRealize Orchestrator Getting Started window.

VMware vRealize Log Insight

UCP Advisor provides a content pack and framework to capture compute and network device logs for VMware vRealize Log Insight.

vRealize Log Insight comes with built-in knowledge and native support for VMware vSphere with operations management. You can analyze logs beyond your virtual infrastructure and use a central log management solution to analyze data from your entire IT environment.

The following figure shows the VMware Log Insight Dashboard window.

Hitachi Automation Director requirements

Hitachi Automation Director provides a flexible workflow engine enabling external teams to build complex workflows which reduce manual and complex provisioning processes. These workflows can be invoked via the Actions menu of individual components in UCP Advisor.

UCP Advisor provides a tight integration with Hitachi Automation Director for invoking complex workflows. The following figure shows the Hitachi Automation Director and UCP Advisor relationship.

Supported browser

Hitachi UCP Advisor supports the Google Chrome browser for Windows, Mac, and Linux. The required version is 60.0 and later.
